Making bonfire night as stress-free as possible for your dog
Spectacular light shows, the whir and crack of rockets, hot dogs and toasted marshmallows. Us humans love the sights, sounds and smells of a fireworks display for Bonfire Night but it’s not as much of a treat for your pooch.
If you’re already worried about your dog’s wellbeing this Bonfire Night, follow the simple steps below to try and minimise the effects of the loud bangs from the fireworks and keep them as calm as possible.
Get organised
Take them for a long walk earlier in the day to tire them out and help them settle in the evening
Let them out to toilet before it gets too late and then bring them in
Buy them a new toy to keep them entertained
Make a playlist of calming music, or search for existing ones on music streaming apps
Make them a ‘den’ out of cushions or a crate, this will provide a safe space that they can escape to
During Bonfire Night and Fireworks displays
Draw the curtains and close all windows and doors
Turn the TV up
Distract them as best as possible – try stuffing a Kong with their favourite treats or play their favourite game
Try to stay calm and relaxed
Play with your pet
Stay safe
The key thing for you and your dog is to head out early for your evening walk and get yourself home and relaxed long before any fireworks get underway.
Your dog will pick up any anxieties from yourself so please do try and stay calm.
Keep a close eye on your dog throughout the evening. If they are distressed to the point of concern, give your vet a call so they can advise on the next steps.
